  • This is arithmetic, not a rule: there is no statutory increase in Saudi Arabia and nothing here goes out of date.
  • It shows the gross increase. Saudi Arabia levies no income tax on employment income, so for an expatriate the whole of it reaches your account; a Saudi national will see 9.75% of any rise in basic or housing go to GOSI.
  • A rise in basic pay also raises your end of service award, because that is calculated on your last wage.

Source: Arithmetic only — no Saudi rule applies. Saudi employment rules change — the Labour Law was amended with effect from February 2025 — so these figures are rechecked at least annually.

What a Saudi pay rise is worth

In most jurisdictions a headline increase and the increase that reaches you are different numbers. In Saudi Arabia, for an expatriate, they are the same number: there is no personal income tax on employment income and no employee GOSI deduction, so the whole of a rise arrives. A Saudi national keeps rather less, with 9.75% of any increase in basic or housing going to GOSI until the SAR 45,000 contributory ceiling is reached.

The second effect, which is larger than it looks

A rise in wage also lifts your end of service award, because Article 84 calculates that award on your last wage rather than on an average across your service. On ten years of service, a 10% rise in the final year lifts the award by 10% across all ten years. Negotiating an increase shortly before departure is therefore worth considerably more than the monthly figure suggests — and a rise deferred until after you leave is worth nothing at all.

Before you treat it as spending money

An untaxed increase is the easiest money in the world to absorb without noticing. Because nothing is withheld for retirement on your behalf in Saudi Arabia, a rise is one of the few natural moments to raise what you put aside by the same amount, before the lifestyle adjusts around it. The Income & Expenditure Calculator shows what your surplus actually is today.

Important — This is an estimate based on the figures you enter and the Saudi rules in force at the date shown with the result. It is not legal or employment advice, and it does not replace your contract, which may define wage, hours or leave differently. Saudi employment law was amended with effect from February 2025; where a figure matters, confirm it against your contract and take advice in the Kingdom.

Saudi Salary Increase — common questions

3 questions

How much of a Saudi pay rise do I keep?

If you are an expatriate, all of it. Saudi Arabia levies no personal income tax on employment income and nothing is deducted from a non-Saudi employee's salary for GOSI, so a SAR 1,000 rise is SAR 1,000 in your account. A Saudi national keeps rather less, because 9.75% of any increase in basic pay or housing goes to GOSI until the SAR 45,000 contributory ceiling is reached.

Does a pay rise affect my end of service award?

Yes, and more than people expect. The award under Article 84 is calculated on your last wage, not on an average over your service, so a rise shortly before you leave lifts the whole award — including the years you served at a lower wage. On long service the effect can be worth several times the rise itself.

Should I compare a Saudi offer on gross pay?

Not against an offer in a taxed jurisdiction, no. A SAR 400,000 package with no income tax is not comparable to a nominally larger gross salary in the UK or Portugal, and the gap runs in both directions once housing, schooling and medical cover are priced in. Put both through our Take-Home Pay Calculator and then test the result against a real budget.
