Risk warning: Contracts for difference are leveraged products, and leverage moves both ways: a small change in the underlying market becomes a much larger change in your account equity. When ESMA introduced the current retail restrictions in 2018, it published national regulators' findings that 74-89% of retail CFD accounts lose money, with average losses per client of EUR 1,600 to EUR 29,000. Do not trade these contracts unless you understand margin close-out and could absorb the loss of your entire account balance. An ETF exists so that an investor can hold a diversified basket cheaply for years. A government bond exists to pay a known income and hand back capital on a fixed date. A CFD exists so that a trader can take a leveraged, cash-settled position on a price for days or weeks. Put the first two inside the third and you get a pair of products — ETF CFDs and bond CFDs — whose mechanics pull in the opposite direction from the instruments they reference.

What You Hold When You Trade an ETF CFD
An ETF CFD is a bilateral contract with a broker referencing the market price of an exchange-traded fund — a broad index tracker, a sector fund, or a narrow thematic vehicle. No fund units are created or bought for you. The broker is your only counterparty, the position is settled in cash against the difference between opening and closing price, and a margin deposit stands behind a notional exposure several times its size.
Two things carry across from the fund, and one does not. The diversification carries across: a CFD on a 500-stock index tracker moves like 500 stocks, not one. The theme carries across: shorting a sector ETF through a CFD is a practical way to express a negative view on an industry without borrowing stock in each constituent. What does not carry across is the ownership economics that make ETFs work as investments — the known annual charge, the absence of any financing clock, the ability to sit through a drawdown indefinitely. A CFD position rents the price; it never owns the portfolio. Bond CFDs Track Futures, Not Bonds
The retail bond CFDs quoted by mainstream brokers are generally written on government bond futures — contracts referencing gilts, US Treasuries or German Bunds — rather than on cash bonds. The quoted price moves inversely to yields: a long bond CFD profits if yields fall and loses if they rise, which makes it, in substance, a leveraged interest-rate position rather than a fixed-income holding.
The distance between a bond and a bond CFD is greater than the name suggests. A bond pays coupons on schedule; the CFD pays none. A bond matures and returns principal on a known date — the property that anchors its role in capital preservation; the CFD has no maturity at all and simply accrues daily financing until closed. A bondholder can ignore every interim price move by holding to redemption; a CFD holder is marked to market continuously and answers to a margin engine. Strip those three properties out and what remains is pure price exposure with borrowing attached — a legitimate trading instrument, and nothing like the asset it references. Where the Retail Leverage Schedule Places Them
The leverage limits that govern retail CFD trading were set by ESMA's product intervention measures, applying to CFDs from 1 August 2018, and were made permanent for the UK by the FCA with effect from 1 August 2019. ESMA's schedule runs: 30:1 for major currency pairs; 20:1 for non-major pairs, gold and major indices; 10:1 for commodities other than gold and non-major equity indices; 5:1 for individual equities and other reference values; 2:1 for cryptocurrencies.
Neither ETFs nor bonds receive a named tier. Both sit inside the catch-all — "individual equities and other reference values" — so CFDs on ETFs and on bond futures are generally margined at the 5:1 level, meaning a deposit in the region of 20% of the notional position. The schedule attaches to the underlying as listed, which produces a result worth checking against your broker's published rates: a CFD written directly on a major index can carry 20:1 retail leverage, while a CFD on an ETF tracking that same index falls in the catch-all at 5:1. Brokers set and publish a margin rate per instrument, sometimes more conservatively than the regulatory floor, so the contract's own specification — not the asset-class headline — is the number that binds you.
The arithmetic at 20% margin deserves one illustration, with deliberately invented numbers. Suppose a thematic ETF CFD with a notional value of 10,000 in your account currency, backed by 2,000 of margin. A 10% fall in the fund's price — unremarkable for a concentrated theme — is a loss of 1,000: half the margin, gone on a move the fund's long-term holders would call an ordinary drawdown.
Duration, With Leverage on Top
Bond prices respond to yield changes in proportion to duration: the longer-dated the instrument, the larger the price move per unit change in yield. Our guide to bond duration and interest-rate risk explains the measure itself. What matters here is what a CFD does to it.
Owned outright, a long-dated government bond's duration risk is real but survivable — the price falls when yields rise, and the holder retains the coupon stream and the pull to par at maturity. Inside a CFD, duration is multiplied by the leverage ratio and stripped of both cushions. Continue the invented arithmetic: suppose a sharp repricing of rate expectations knocks 5% off a long-dated bond future — a move that owners of the underlying would absorb without any cash consequence. On a CFD margined at 20%, that 5% fall in notional equals a quarter of the margin backing the position. The instrument retail investors associate with safety becomes, under leverage, a concentrated bet on the next central bank meeting.
Yield moves also cluster around scheduled events — policy decisions, inflation prints, auctions — so bond futures can jump between prices rather than gliding. Stop-loss orders cap intent, not outcome: in a gapping market they execute at the next available price, which can sit well beyond the trigger.
Distributions, Coupons and Cash Adjustments
ETF CFDs and bond CFDs handle income in opposite ways, and neither hands you the income the underlying was designed to produce.
On a CFD over a distributing ETF, a position open across the ex-distribution date typically attracts a cash adjustment: credited to a long position, debited to a short. The adjustment approximates the distribution's amount, but it is a broker ledger entry, not fund income — it carries no assurance of equivalent tax treatment and confers none of a unitholder's rights. On an accumulating ETF, no adjustment arises at all, because the fund reinvests income internally and the reinvestment reaches the CFD only through the unit price.
On a bond CFD tracking a future, no coupon ever arrives and no adjustment substitutes for one. The futures price already embeds the market's expectation of coupon income and financing over the contract period, so the CFD holder's entire economics reduce to price change minus costs. Where a broker quotes a CFD on a cash bond instead, any treatment of accrued interest is whatever the broker's contract terms say it is — read the instrument's specification rather than assuming bond-market convention applies.
The practical consequence is one-directional: these wrappers convert income-producing assets into pure price plays. An investor who wants the income should hold the asset.
The 50% Close-Out Rule When Slow Markets Turn Fast
Under the same FCA and ESMA framework, a provider must close positions when a retail client's funds fall to 50% of the margin required to maintain their open CFDs, and the test applies at the level of the account. Negative balance protection — also account-level — then guarantees the client cannot lose more than the total funds in that account.
Read those two rules together and the account, not the position, is the unit of survival. An adverse move in one leveraged bond position drains the equity that supports every other open trade; the close-out engine does not choose which position deserved to survive. Diversified trackers and government bond futures move gently most of the time, which tempts traders into larger notional sizes than they would run on a single share — and size, not volatility, is what determines how quickly the 50% line approaches when the gentle market has its violent week.
Clients who reclassify as professional — a status with qualifying tests on portfolio size, market experience and trading frequency — give up negative balance protection along with the leverage caps, and for them losses can exceed everything deposited. The same is true at brokers regulated in permissive offshore jurisdictions, where the protection may never have existed. Liquidity: Where These Contracts Differ From Share CFDs
A share CFD's dealing costs shadow one order book. ETF and bond CFDs each shadow something different, and the differences cut in both directions.
An ETF CFD is priced off the fund's own on-exchange market, and the quality of that market depends on the liquidity of the basket the fund holds and the activity of its market makers — not on the fund's size alone. A mega-cap index tracker trades with spreads competitive with the most liquid single names. A niche thematic or single-country fund can carry a materially wider spread, which the CFD inherits and the broker's own margin widens further. ETF CFDs also generally deal only during the underlying exchange's hours, whereas major index CFDs are quoted nearly around the clock — so an ETF CFD position can be unhedgeable overnight while the index it tracks moves. Bond CFDs referencing major government bond futures sit at the opposite pole: the underlying futures are among the deepest markets in existence during their core sessions, and pricing in calm conditions is correspondingly tight. The caveats are the session boundaries and the event calendar — liquidity thins outside core hours, and around major data releases even the deepest bond markets reprice in steps. Tight average spreads describe the middle of the distribution, not the moments a leveraged position is most likely to be closed out.
Who These Contracts Suit — and Who They Do Not
The defensible constituency is narrow: experienced, adequately capitalised traders running short-term directional views on interest rates, sectors or themes, and investors with a genuine, time-boxed hedging need — for instance, a short bond CFD carried against rate-sensitive holdings through an identified risk window, or a short sector-ETF CFD offsetting concentrated industry exposure. These contracts are the wrong instrument for:
- Anyone building long-term wealth through funds. Ownership compounds at a known annual cost; a leveraged contract pays financing daily on the full notional for as long as it is open.
- Income seekers. The coupon and the distribution — the entire reason income investors hold these assets — are exactly what the wrapper removes or approximates away.
- Capital-preservation investors. A bond CFD has no maturity, no principal repayment and no coupon; it preserves nothing.
- Anyone who could not absorb the loss of the whole account. The regulator-published record — 74-89% of retail accounts losing money across EU jurisdictions in the analyses ESMA cited — describes the typical outcome, not the worst case.
- Anyone who would struggle to meet a margin demand at short notice, since the product's central mechanism is a call for fresh capital at the least convenient moment.
- Investors who want tax-sheltered growth, because CFDs sit outside ISAs, SIPPs and every other UK tax-advantaged wrapper.
Owning the Underlying Instead
For most readers of this page, the honest conclusion is that the exposure they want already exists in ownable form.
