IB Schools in Bangkok: 2025 Results, Options & Admissions Guide

The IB in Bangkok: A World-Class Provision

The International Baccalaureate (IB) is the dominant curriculum at Bangkok's top-performing international schools. The city is home to schools that consistently outperform the global IB average by significant margins, and for families who value breadth, rigour, and international university recognition, Bangkok's IB provision is among the best in Southeast Asia.

Understanding the IB landscape in Bangkok requires distinguishing between two overlapping categories: schools that offer the IB Diploma Programme (DP) at sixth form only — sometimes after a British National Curriculum phase through IGCSE — and schools that offer the full IB continuum, meaning IB from age 3 through to university entry.

This guide covers all Bangkok schools offering IB programmes, their 2025 results, fees, admissions profiles, and the decision between IB and A-Levels for UK and US university-bound families.

2025 IB Diploma Results: Bangkok at a Glance

The IB Diploma is scored out of 45 points. The global average in 2025 was 30.58. Bangkok's leading schools substantially exceed this:

School 2025 Average Pass Rate Notes
NIST International School 37 100% 27% scored 40+; two students scored 45/45
Bangkok Patana School ~35 100% Non-selective; 128 students; 441 university offers
KIS International School ~35 Not disclosed Full IB continuum school
Global Average 2025 30.58 ~79% IBO global cohort

NIST's performance is exceptional in context: it is a full IB continuum school with a non-selective primary admission process (children are admitted at K1 based on availability and nationality quota, not academic testing), making a 37-point average and 100% pass rate genuinely outstanding rather than the product of elite selection.

Bangkok Patana's IB results are equally striking for the same reason: the school is explicitly non-selective. Its 128-student 2025 cohort received 441 university offers from 172 universities in 16 countries, including 239 offers from world top-100 institutions.

What Is the IB Diploma Programme?

The IB Diploma Programme (DP) is a two-year pre-university qualification taken at ages 16–18 (equivalent to Years 12–13 / Grades 11–12). It is administered by the International Baccalaureate Organisation (IBO) and taken at schools worldwide.

Structure

Students take six subjects across six subject groups:

  1. Studies in Language and Literature (e.g. English A Literature or Language & Literature)
  2. Language Acquisition (a second language)
  3. Individuals and Societies (e.g. History, Economics, Geography, Psychology)
  4. Sciences (e.g. Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Environmental Systems)
  5. Mathematics (Analysis and Approaches, or Applications and Interpretation)
  6. The Arts, or a second subject from groups 1–5

Three subjects must be taken at Higher Level (HL) and three at Standard Level (SL).

Core Components

In addition to six subjects, students complete:

  • Theory of Knowledge (TOK): a philosophy of knowledge course
  • Extended Essay (EE): an independent 4,000-word research essay in a subject of choice
  • Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS): a portfolio of activities outside academic study

The core components contribute up to 3 additional points, making a maximum score of 45.

Grading

Each subject is graded 1–7. The diploma is awarded for a total score of 24 or above (with certain grade minimums). The minimum passing score is 24; the maximum is 45.

Full IB Continuum vs IB DP Only: The Distinction

IB Diploma Only (with IGCSE or national curriculum before)

Bangkok Patana follows the British National Curriculum through IGCSE and then transitions students to IB DP at sixth form. Children do not sit IB assessments during primary or most of secondary — they experience the IB framework only in the final two years. Note: Shrewsbury International School follows the same British NC → IGCSE pathway but offers A-Levels at sixth form rather than IB DP.

This is a respected model. IGCSE provides a clear, externally validated qualification at age 16 and a familiar British structure for Years 7–11. The transition to IB DP at sixth form is a distinct change in framework, but one that students handle well when prepared.

Full IB Continuum (PYP → MYP → DP)

NIST International School, KIS International School, and Wells International School follow the IB from Early Years through to graduation. The three IB programmes for the pre-DP years are:

  • Primary Years Programme (PYP): for ages 3–12. Inquiry-based, cross-disciplinary. No formal external examinations.
  • Middle Years Programme (MYP): for ages 11–16. Replaces IGCSE. Assessment through internal portfolio and a Personal Project in the final year.
  • IB Diploma Programme (DP): ages 16–18.

The full continuum has a cohesive, consistent educational philosophy from early childhood. Children in continuum schools do not sit IGCSE — which means mid-secondary transfer to a UK school requiring GCSE records requires careful management.

Bangkok's IB Schools in Detail

NIST International School

NIST is Thailand's first full IB World School. It holds CIS and NEASC accreditation and has been offering the full IB continuum since its founding. The school's performance is consistently among the highest in Asia, and its alumni attend universities across the UK, US, Canada, Australia, and Asia.

Admissions: Nationality cap of 30% per nationality. Wait Pool of 1–2+ years for popular nationalities including British. Apply by mid-December for the following August start. For detail, see our waiting lists guide.

Location: Sukhumvit Soi 15, Asok, Bangkok (BTS accessible).

Fees (2026-27):

  • K1–K2: THB 650,200; Grades 1–5: THB 889,200; Grades 6–8: THB 956,000; Grades 9–10: THB 1,038,900; Grades 11–12 (IB DP): THB 1,132,800
  • Plus one-time Campus Development Fee (THB 575,000 refundable) or annual Campus Fund (THB 60,500)

Bangkok Patana School

The oldest British international school in Thailand. Follows British NC → IGCSE → IB DP. Non-selective, non-profit, CIS re-accredited 2022. IB DP average approximately 35 points in 2025.

Location: Bang Na, Sukhumvit 105.

Fees (2025-26):

  • Primary: approximately THB 450,000–620,000; Secondary IGCSE: approximately THB 620,000–780,000; IB DP: approximately THB 750,000–800,000

KIS International School

The only Bangkok school — and one of very few globally — offering all four IB programmes: PYP, MYP, DP, and CP (Career-related Programme). The CP is an alternative to the DP that combines IB coursework with a career-related study, suited to students whose interests lie in applied rather than purely academic fields.

KIS operates two campuses: Huai Khwang (central Bangkok) and Reignwood Park. The school has a smaller community feel than Patana or NIST. CIS accredited; ONESQA certified.

IB DP average: approximately 35 points.

Fees: approximately THB 440,100–944,600 per year (PYP to IB DP).

Wells International School

Wells offers the full IB continuum across multiple Bangkok campuses (On Nut, Thong Lo, Bang Na) and is the most affordable accredited IB school in Bangkok. PYP, MYP, and DP are all offered, with AP courses also available.

Fees: approximately THB 220,000–500,000 per year — significantly below other IB schools.

Admissions: generally accessible; waiting lists much shorter than NIST or Patana.

Shrewsbury International School

Note: Shrewsbury International School does not offer the IB Diploma. It follows British NC → IGCSE → A-Levels at sixth form at both Riverside and City campuses. It is a respected British-heritage school with CIS accreditation. Secondary fees approximately THB 700,000–1,210,000 per year. Families seeking A-Levels (rather than IB DP) should consider Shrewsbury alongside Harrow and Brighton College.

IB Versus A-Levels: For UK and US University Entry

UK University (UCAS)

Both A-Levels and IB DP are accepted by all UK universities. Key points:

  • Russell Group standard IB offers: typically 36–38 points (with HL requirements specific to the course)
  • Oxford and Cambridge: IB offer levels vary by course; commonly 38–40 points for science and competitive arts courses
  • UK university admissions tutors are well-versed in assessing IB grades; the qualification is not a disadvantage vs A-Levels
  • NIST's placements at Oxford and Cambridge confirm that the IB DP from a Bangkok school is competitive

US University (Common App / Coalition App)

The IB DP is very well regarded by US admissions offices, often considered stronger evidence of academic rigour than standard high school diplomas. IB HL results carry weight with US universities. NIST's 2025 placements included Cornell and Penn.

When A-Levels May Be Preferable

  • When a child is a strong specialist in three or four subjects and would benefit from A-Level depth
  • When UCAS is the clear and only university market
  • When the family values the direct A-Level/UCAS continuity for peace of mind

For the majority of British families in Bangkok with flexible or international university ambitions, the IB DP from a high-performing school is an excellent choice.

Frequently asked questions

What is the IB average score at Bangkok international schools?

In 2025, NIST International School achieved an average IB Diploma score of 37 points (global average: 30.58), with a 100% pass rate and 27% of students scoring 40 or above. Bangkok Patana averaged approximately 35 points, also with a 100% pass rate. KIS International School averaged approximately 35 points.

What is the difference between IB DP and the full IB continuum?

The IB Diploma Programme (DP) covers only the final two years of secondary school (ages 16–18). The full IB continuum includes the Primary Years Programme (PYP, ages 3–12), Middle Years Programme (MYP, ages 11–16), and IB DP — providing a connected IB framework from early childhood through university entry. NIST, KIS, and Wells Bangkok offer the full continuum.

Is IB accepted by UK universities?

Yes. All UK universities, including Oxford, Cambridge, and the Russell Group, accept the IB Diploma. Standard offers for competitive courses at Russell Group universities typically require 36–38 IB points. Oxbridge may set higher demands depending on the course. UK universities are well-versed in assessing IB grades.

Which school in Bangkok offers all four IB programmes?

KIS International School is the only school in Bangkok — and one of a small number globally — offering all four IB programmes: PYP (primary), MYP (middle school), DP (diploma), and CP (career-related programme). NIST and Wells offer PYP, MYP, and DP but not CP.
