Secondary Schools in Bangkok for Expat Families: GCSEs, IB & A-Levels

Secondary School in Bangkok: Why This Decision Matters Most

Secondary school entry is the most consequential decision in a Bangkok international school career. At Year 7 (age 11–12), children transition to the school framework that will see them through IGCSE and on to A-Levels or IB Diploma — qualifications that determine university options. Getting this decision wrong by choosing the wrong curriculum pathway, or failing to secure entry to a suitable school before arriving in Bangkok, has lasting consequences.

The secondary landscape in Bangkok is genuinely strong. Several of the city's schools post results well above the relevant global averages, and placements at world-leading universities are routine. But the choice between institutions is more important than the general quality would suggest, because the critical fork — A-Levels versus IB Diploma at sixth form — occurs within the secondary phase and cannot easily be changed later.

The Secondary School Landscape

Bangkok's secondary international schools can be grouped by curriculum pathway:

British National Curriculum → IGCSE → IB Diploma at Sixth Form

  • Bangkok Patana School (Bang Na)
  • Shrewsbury International School (Riverside and City campuses)

British National Curriculum → IGCSE → A-Levels at Sixth Form

  • Harrow International School Bangkok
  • Brighton College Bangkok (Sukhumvit and Vibhavadi campuses)
  • Wycombe Abbey International School Bangkok (opening August 2026)

Full IB Continuum (MYP → IB Diploma, or IB DP only)

  • NIST International School (full IB — MYP into DP)
  • KIS International School (MYP → IB DP; also IB CP)
  • Wells International School (MYP → IB DP)

American Curriculum (AP + IB DP option) at Sixth Form

  • International School Bangkok (ISB)

Bangkok Patana School: Secondary and IB DP

Bangkok Patana is the benchmark British curriculum secondary school in Bangkok. At Year 7, the school accepts a significant cohort from its own primary, plus external entrants. Year 7 is the most oversubscribed external entry point. Apply by October–November for the following August start.

The Curriculum Pathway

  • Years 7–9: British National Curriculum (Key Stage 3)
  • Years 10–11: IGCSE (Cambridge International)
  • Years 12–13: IB Diploma Programme (not A-Levels)

Families whose children arrive at Year 7 should be prepared for the IB DP at sixth form. This is not a limitation — the IB DP is excellent preparation for both UK and international universities — but it means the school is not suitable for families whose secondary plan depends on A-Level results.

IB DP Results

In 2025, Bangkok Patana's 128 IB DP candidates achieved an average of approximately 35 points against a global average of 30.58. The 100% pass rate is impressive for a non-selective school. University outcomes include 441 offers from 172 universities across 16 countries, with 239 from world top-100 institutions.

Secondary Fees (2025-26)

  • Years 7–11 (IGCSE): approximately THB 620,000–780,000 per year
  • Years 12–13 (IB DP): approximately THB 750,000–800,000 per year

NIST International School: MYP and IB DP

NIST's secondary school follows the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) from Grades 6–10, moving into IB DP at Grades 11–12. The MYP is a holistic framework that differs significantly from the British National Curriculum — students do not take IGCSE. Instead, MYP assessment is through internal portfolios and an externally assessed personal project in Year 5 of the MYP (Grade 10).

This can be a consideration for families who may need to move mid-secondary: MYP qualifications do not map as cleanly onto GCSE records as IGCSE does if a child needs to re-enter a UK school partway through.

IB DP Results 2025

NIST's IB DP results are the best in Bangkok and among the best in Southeast Asia: an average of 37 points, 100% pass rate, 27% scoring 40 or above, and two students achieving the maximum 45 points. University destinations include Oxford, Cambridge, UCL, Imperial, Cornell, and Penn.

Fees (Grades 6–12, 2026-27)

  • Grades 6–8: THB 956,000 per year
  • Grades 9–10: THB 1,038,900 per year
  • Grades 11–12 (IB DP): THB 1,132,800 per year

External secondary entry to NIST from Year 7 onward is significantly constrained by the 30% nationality cap. Families who did not enter at primary level via K1 or early primary should not rely on gaining secondary entry to NIST without prior Wait Pool placement. See our waiting lists guide.

Harrow International School Bangkok: IGCSE → A-Levels

Harrow Bangkok is the most complete British-model secondary school in Bangkok. It follows the British National Curriculum through IGCSE and then offers A-Levels at Years 12–13 — the only mainstream international school in Bangkok to do so.

A-Level Results 2024

In 2024, 51% of A-Level grades at Harrow Bangkok were A or A*, against a UK national average of approximately 27.6%. University destinations for the Class of 2024: 51% to UK universities (Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial, LSE, UCL, wide Russell Group); 12% to US institutions.

Fees (Secondary, 2026-27)

  • Years 6–8: THB 961,900 per year
  • Years 9–11 (IGCSE): THB 1,040,000 per year
  • Years 12–13 (A-Levels): THB 1,063,000 per year
  • Boarding available from Year 6 (add-on: THB 456,700–571,100 per year)

Admissions

Harrow accepts external entrants at Year 7, Year 9, and Year 12. Year 12 external entry is competitive; families should apply early and be aware of the Waiting-Pool Fee structure for deferred offers.

International School Bangkok (ISB): American Pathway

ISB follows an American curriculum through Middle School and High School, offering both AP (Advanced Placement) courses and the option of the IB Diploma Programme at senior level. Approximately 55% of seniors pursue the IB DP.

ISB is primarily relevant for families with US university ambitions or those following an American school pathway from another country. It is less suitable as a direct preparation for UK UCAS applications, though IB DP from ISB is fully accepted by UK universities.

Fees (2025-26)

  • Middle School (Grades 6–8): THB 1,104,000 per year
  • High School (Grades 9–12): THB 1,162,000 per year

The University Ambition Framework

The single most useful decision-making tool is to clarify your university target market before choosing a secondary school:

University Target Best Curriculum Pathway Recommended Schools
UK Russell Group (Oxbridge, Imperial, UCL) A-Levels or IB DP (both strong) Harrow (A-Levels), NIST (IB 37 avg), Patana (IB 35 avg)
UK mid-range universities A-Levels or IB DP Any accredited school above
US Ivy League / top 50 IB DP or AP NIST (IB, US placements confirmed), ISB (AP + IB DP)
International / global mix IB DP NIST, Patana, KIS, Wells
Flexibility (unsure) IB DP (broadly portable) Patana, NIST, KIS

A-Levels from Harrow are highly respected and map directly onto UCAS with clear predicted grades. IB DP from NIST or Patana is equally respected by UK universities, and IB is additionally accepted by most US and European institutions. The IB DP is the more portable qualification globally.

Year 7 Entry: The Practicalities

Year 7 is the secondary school entry point at British curriculum schools. It is the most competitive external entry point at Bangkok Patana and Harrow. Key practical points:

  • Apply in October–November of the child's Year 6 year (before the summer start of Year 7)
  • The CAT4 assessment is standard for secondary entry — this tests reasoning ability, not curriculum knowledge
  • A head teacher or class teacher reference from the current school is required
  • Two years of school reports should be submitted
  • At Patana, Year 7 waiting lists mean that some external applicants will not receive an offer for August entry; maintain a backup application

Mid-Secondary Entry (Years 8–11)

Families relocating to Bangkok mid-secondary have options. Years 8–11 typically have more flexibility than Year 7 at most schools, because natural attrition (families leaving Bangkok) creates spaces. IGCSE subjects vary by school — a child joining Year 10 partway through IGCSE choices needs careful handling to ensure subject compatibility.

For Year 10 entry specifically, confirm:

  • Whether the school's IGCSE subject selection matches your child's existing choices
  • Whether EAL support is available if needed
  • What the school's policy is on students joining mid-IGCSE cycle (most handle this routinely)

Frequently asked questions

What age is secondary school entry in Bangkok?

Secondary school in Bangkok international schools begins at Year 7 equivalent (age 11–12). This is the most competitive external entry point at schools like Bangkok Patana and Harrow. Some schools also have natural Year 9 or Year 10 entry points.

Do Bangkok secondary schools offer GCSEs?

Not GCSEs as such — Bangkok international schools offer IGCSE (International GCSE), the Cambridge-administered equivalent that is nearly identical in standard and widely accepted by UK universities and employers. The IGCSE is taken at Years 10–11 (ages 15–16) at British curriculum schools.

Which Bangkok secondary school is best for UCAS applications?

Harrow Bangkok, with its A-Level programme and 51% A*/A in 2024, is the most directly aligned with UCAS. However, NIST (IB DP average 37) and Bangkok Patana (IB DP average 35) both have strong UCAS track records, including placements at Oxford, Cambridge, UCL, and Imperial. UK universities are fully conversant with IB.

Is Year 7 entry competitive at Bangkok Patana?

Yes. Year 7 is one of Bangkok Patana's most oversubscribed year groups because it is the secondary school entry point, attracting both internal Patana primary students and external applicants. External applications should be submitted no later than October–November of the preceding school year.
