Secondary Schools in Kuala Lumpur for Expat Families: GCSEs, A-Levels & IB

Updated 2026-06-137 min readBy Global Investments Editorial

Secondary school planning is the most complex and time-sensitive challenge facing British expat families relocating to Kuala Lumpur. The primary school landscape is manageable; the secondary landscape requires careful, early planning — and in some cases, a recalibration of expectations about which school is realistic.

This guide covers secondary school options in KL from Year 7 through to Sixth Form, with a clear account of the current capacity situation, comparative academic results, and how to navigate the constraints that affect the market in 2026.

The Secondary School Capacity Situation

The starting point for any family with secondary-age children must be an honest assessment of what is available. For 2026-27:

Alice Smith School:

  • Years 7, 8, 9: Wait pool only (no direct enrolment)
  • Years 10, 11, 13: Fully CLOSED to new entrants
  • Year 12: Open with limited spaces

Garden International School:

  • Secondary years are sought after; early application (9–12 months ahead) is essential
  • No published year-group closure equivalent to Alice Smith, but demand is high

BSKL: Generally the most accessible of the premium British schools, including for corporate relocations on shorter timelines.

For secondary-age families who have fixed on Alice Smith as their school, the message is direct: Years 10, 11, and 13 will not be available for new entrants in 2026-27, and the situation for 2027-28 is expected to remain constrained. A strategy that relies solely on Alice Smith is not viable for most secondary-age children.

Alice Smith Secondary Campus

Alice Smith Secondary is located at Seri Kembangan, approximately 20 km south-east of central KL. The campus serves Years 7–13, offering Cambridge IGCSE in Years 10–11 and A-Levels in Years 12–13. There is no IB Diploma option.

Academic results (2025):

  • IGCSE: 76% of grades A*/A (grades 9–7); 57% at A* (grades 9–8)
  • A-Level: 46.8% A*/A; 70.5% A*/B
  • University destinations: Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial, UCL, LSE, Edinburgh

These results place Alice Smith among the strongest British curriculum schools in South-East Asia. The UK national average for A-Level A* grades runs considerably lower, and while Alice Smith benefits from a selective admissions environment, its results are a genuine indicator of educational quality.

Fees 2026-27:

  • Years 7–9: MYR 112,950/year (+6% SST = MYR 119,727)
  • Years 10–13: MYR 122,370/year (+6% SST = MYR 129,712)

For families who do secure a secondary place — particularly at Year 7 or Year 12 — Alice Smith remains the benchmark British school in Malaysia.

Garden International School Secondary — Mont Kiara

GIS Secondary and Sixth Form operates from its campus on Jalan Kiara 3 in Mont Kiara. Years 7–11 follow the British curriculum through Cambridge IGCSE; Years 12–13 offer a choice of A-Levels or IB Diploma — one of the few schools in KL to offer this flexibility.

Academic results (2024):

  • IGCSE: 100% pass rate; record 99% earned at least one A*/A; 72% of all grades A or A*
  • University placements: Harvard, Cambridge, Oxford, Imperial, UCL, LSE across 12 countries

GIS's 2024 IGCSE record — 72% of all grades at A or A* — is outstanding and comparable with Alice Smith on a like-for-like basis. For British families who cannot secure an Alice Smith secondary place, GIS is not a second-tier alternative: it is an academically excellent school in its own right, with the added advantage of being located in the heart of Mont Kiara.

Fees 2026-27:

Year Group Annual Fee (MYR) Plus SST (MYR) Total (MYR)
Years 7–8 118,170 7,090 125,260
Year 9 122,310 7,339 129,649
Years 10–11 (IGCSE) 126,870 7,612 134,482
Years 12–13 (A-Level/IB) 126,870 7,612 134,482

EAL surcharges apply for Years 7–9 where additional language support is required (MYR 13,130–18,360/year extra).

BSKL Secondary — Tropicana

BSKL offers Cambridge IGCSE (Years 10–11) and A-Levels (Years 12–13). The curriculum follows the English National Curriculum from Year 7. Nord Anglia's collaboration programmes with MIT and Juilliard are integrated into secondary teaching — the MIT link through STEAM modules, the Juilliard link through performing arts.

Fees 2026-27:

Year Group Annual Fee (MYR) Plus SST (MYR) Total (MYR)
Years 7–9 106,790 6,407 113,197
Years 10–11 125,425 7,526 132,951
Years 12–13 127,605 7,656 135,261

BSKL is the most accessible of the three premium British schools for secondary entry, and a realistic option for corporate relocation families with 6–12 weeks' notice. Its COBIS and CIS accreditations confirm the quality of the British curriculum delivery, and A-Level university placements are strong. The Nord Anglia network provides additional resources and quality monitoring that smaller independent schools cannot match.

ISKL Secondary (IB Diploma and AP)

ISKL in Ampang Hilir offers the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) for Grades 6–10 and the IB Diploma for Grades 11–12. Advanced Placement (AP) courses run alongside the Diploma programme.

IB Diploma results (2025):

  • 93% pass rate (129 candidates)
  • Average score: 34.2 (global average: 30.6)
  • 18% scored 40 or above
  • 27% earned Bilingual Diploma
  • 400+ university offers from 18 countries

AP results (2025):

  • Average score: 4.1 out of 5
  • 83% scored 4 or 5

Fees (2025-26):

  • Grades 6–8: approximately MYR 125,000/year (~£21,370)
  • Grades 9–12: MYR 143,400/year (~£24,515)

ISKL is the highest-fee school in the KL market and the strongest performing on IB metrics. For British families, the key consideration is the US alignment of the broader curriculum. ISKL is well-staffed for US university applications (Common App) but has fewer dedicated resources for UK-specific UCAS coaching compared to Alice Smith or GIS. British families whose children may apply to both UK and US universities — a growing trend — will find ISKL excellent. Families firmly focused on Russell Group A-Level pathways may find the adjustment to IB structure and the absence of A-Levels challenging.

Reigate Grammar School KL (RGSKL) — New Option, 2025

RGSKL opened in August 2025 in Kajang, approximately 30 km south-east of central KL. It offers the full British curriculum from EYFS to Sixth Form — Cambridge IGCSE and A-Levels — with an initial cohort of approximately 450 students and class sizes under 20.

Fees range from MYR 50,400 to MYR 108,630 per year at secondary level — lower than GIS or BSKL. The school's facilities include eight science laboratories and a swimming pool.

The principal challenge is location. Kajang is a significant commute from most expat areas (Mont Kiara, Bangsar, Ampang). Families already based in the south-east of Selangor, or those willing to relocate closer to Kajang, will find RGSKL a more accessible option with real capacity available at secondary year groups currently closed at Alice Smith. It will take several years before RGSKL has established A-Level and IGCSE results data, which is a consideration for families making placement decisions today.

Cheltenham College KL — New, 2026

Cheltenham College KL opened in central KL in early 2026, the first British heritage brand school in a genuinely central location. It offers British EYFS through to A-Levels (ages 3–18). Fees were not published at the time of writing; contact the school directly. No results data yet. Central KL location is a genuine differentiator.

Sixth Form Options in KL

For families arriving specifically for Sixth Form (Years 12–13), the option set is:

School Sixth Form Pathway Availability 2026-27
Alice Smith A-Levels only Year 12 open (limited); Year 13 closed
GIS A-Levels or IB Diploma Apply early; sought-after
BSKL A-Levels Generally accessible
ISKL IB Diploma + AP Generally accessible; US-aligned

GIS's dual A-Level/IB Diploma option at Sixth Form is unique among KL's main schools and represents genuine value for families whose children completed IGCSEs elsewhere and are uncertain about their university destination.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best secondary school in KL for British students?

Alice Smith consistently ranks highest on academic results — 46.8% A*/A at A-Level in 2025, with university destinations including Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial, and UCL. However, secondary entry is severely restricted (Years 10, 11, 13 closed for 2026-27). GIS is the closest academic equivalent with strong IGCSE results (72% A*/A in 2024) and generally better availability. BSKL is the most accessible premium option for corporate relocations.

What A-Level results do KL international schools achieve?

Alice Smith achieved 46.8% A*/A grades at A-Level in 2025 and 70.5% A*/B — significantly above UK national averages. GIS has a strong record across multiple years with similar benchmarks. Even allowing for the selective nature of these schools, results place them firmly in the top tier of British-curriculum schools globally.

Is ISKL suitable for British students targeting UK universities?

ISKL offers the IB Diploma, which UK universities including Russell Group fully accept. Typical Russell Group IB offers are 36–38 points; ISKL averaged 34.2 in 2025, so strong students are well-placed. However, ISKL is primarily US-aligned and has fewer resources specifically dedicated to UCAS coaching compared to Alice Smith or GIS. British families need to factor this in.

What are the Sixth Form options in KL for British students?

Alice Smith offers A-Levels only at Sixth Form (Years 12–13). GIS offers both A-Levels and IB Diploma. BSKL offers A-Levels. ISKL offers IB Diploma and AP. Alice Smith Year 12 has limited open spaces for 2026-27; Year 13 is closed. GIS and BSKL are more accessible for Sixth Form entry.
