Secondary Schools in Cyprus for Expat Families

The secondary school years — from around age 11 through to 18 — are when qualification pathways matter most and when the choice of school has the most direct bearing on university options. Cyprus's English-medium private secondary sector is well-developed, with a range of institutions offering globally recognised qualifications from Cambridge IGCSE through to A Level and the International Baccalaureate Diploma.

This guide covers the leading secondary schools by city, the qualifications they offer, key entry requirements and what families should consider when making a secondary school choice in Cyprus.

The Secondary Landscape in Cyprus

English-medium secondary education in Cyprus broadly follows two structural models:

  1. All-through schools — admitting children at nursery or primary age and educating them to 18 within a single institution. Transitions are internal and relatively seamless. Examples: American Academy (Limassol and Nicosia), Heritage Private School, Foley's School, Pascal English Schools, TJSS Nicosia.

  2. Secondary-only or senior schools — admitting pupils at age 11 or 13, often selectively. The English School Nicosia is the primary example.

For families relocating at secondary age, the all-through schools are the more common entry point, as selective schools are harder to enter mid-career. For families arriving with younger children, both models are open.

Secondary Schools in Limassol

American Academy Limassol

The Academy's secondary programme runs from Class 1 (age 11–12) through to Class 7 (age 17–18), delivering Cambridge IGCSE at Class 4–5 and Cambridge A Levels in Classes 6 and 7. Core compulsory subjects include English, Mathematics, PE and Greek throughout, with a broad range of optional subjects at IGCSE and A Level.

Secondary annual fees range from approximately €7,230 (Class 1) to €9,750 (Classes 6–7) as of 2025. Full boarding is available from approximately €27,500 per year. The school is experienced with international admissions at secondary level.

Foley's School

One of Limassol's highest-profile secondary schools, Foley's offers Cambridge IGCSE and A Level (plus the Cyprus Apolytirion), following the UK National Curriculum throughout. Annual secondary fees range from approximately €8,800 to €14,050. Competition for secondary places is strong; apply early. Families specifically seeking the IB Diploma in Limassol should look to The Island Private School (full IB continuum) or, from September 2025, Pascal English School Limassol.

Heritage Private School

Heritage's secondary section runs from Year 7 to Year 13, offering Cambridge IGCSE, GCSE, AS and A Levels via its Cambridge International Fellowship Centre status. The school runs Cambridge Checkpoint assessments in the lower secondary years, giving detailed diagnostic information before the IGCSE course begins. Its Palodia campus setting gives it a distinctive character — quieter and more spacious than city-centre schools.

Secondary Schools in Nicosia

The English School Nicosia

Founded in 1900, The English School is the most academically prestigious secondary school in Cyprus. Entry at Year 7 (age 11) is selective via a competitive entrance examination in English, Mathematics and Reasoning. The school offers Cambridge IGCSE, A Level and the Cyprus Apolytirion, and has a strong track record of placing students at Russell Group universities in the UK and leading European and American institutions. Annual fees are approximately USD 9,600 (roughly €8,800–€9,000) as of 2025.

Families should not underestimate the competition: places are limited and the examination is genuinely demanding. For more on managing this process, see applying to an international school in Cyprus.

The Grammar School Nicosia

The Grammar School offers a seven-year secondary programme culminating in both the Cyprus Apolytirion and Cambridge IGCSE, AS and A Levels. Compulsory subjects throughout include English, Mathematics, Modern Greek and Physical Education. The Upper School provides a wide subject range at IGCSE and A Level. Moderately selective at entry. A dual-qualification outcome — both Cambridge and Apolytirion — is useful for students who may wish to apply to both Cypriot and UK universities.

Pascal English School Nicosia

Pascal offers structured Cambridge IGCSE and A Level preparation, with a reputation particularly strong in Mathematics and Sciences. The Nicosia campus is well-suited to families living in the capital who want a reliable British-curriculum secondary programme. No selective examination at most year-group entry points.

American Academy Nicosia

Nicosia's American Academy campus mirrors the Limassol model, offering the English National Curriculum leading to Cambridge IGCSE and A Levels for ages 11–18. Good for families settled in the capital who want continuity with the Academy's established brand.

The Junior and Senior School (TJSS) Nicosia

TJSS is notable as a private not-for-profit school that from September 2025 became an IB World School, authorised to offer the IB Diploma Programme in Years 12 and 13. This makes it one of the few Nicosia secondary schools offering IB at sixth-form level alongside its English National Curriculum programme in Years 7–11. Well-regarded for pastoral care and academic breadth.

Secondary Schools in Paphos

The International School of Paphos offers full British-curriculum secondary education through to Year 13 (A Level), making it the primary choice for secondary-age expat children in Paphos. Families moving to Paphos with GCSE or A Level students should meet with the school to confirm current subject availability and class sizes at senior secondary level, as smaller schools sometimes have more limited subject options than the larger Limassol and Nicosia schools.

Secondary Schools in Larnaca

Pascal English School Larnaca

Pascal Larnaca is a long-established IB World School, offering the IB Diploma (for over 20 years) alongside Cambridge A Levels, making it one of the schools in Cyprus where students can genuinely choose between the two main qualification routes. PASCAL is the largest private education group on the island. Larnaca, home to the main international airport, offers a less-crowded character and competitive property prices.

(Note: the American International School in Cyprus, despite its name, is located in Nicosia — see below — not Larnaca.)

American International School in Cyprus (AISC) — Nicosia

AISC, established in 1987 in Nicosia, is a Kindergarten-to-Grade-12 American school offering both the American High School Diploma and the IB Diploma Programme in the final two years of secondary school (Grades 11–12). It does not offer the IB PYP or MYP, so it is not a full IB continuum school, but it is one of the longest-established IB Diploma providers in the capital and is accredited by the Middle States Association and the Council of International Schools. For the full IB continuum (PYP through Diploma) the only option in Cyprus is The Island Private School in Limassol.

Continuity for Globally Mobile Families

One of the strongest arguments for an all-through school in Cyprus (or The Island Private School for the full IB track) is curriculum continuity. Families who may relocate again before their children finish school benefit from institutions whose qualifications and teaching frameworks are recognised worldwide. Cambridge IGCSE is offered in more than 160 countries; the IB Diploma in over 150. Both provide a clear, internationally recognised onward pathway regardless of where the family moves next.

How Global Investments Can Help

Secondary-school decisions often anchor the wider family lifestyle in Cyprus. The school's location shapes the neighbourhood choice; the qualification pathway influences university options; and for families pursuing EU residency, the timing of a qualifying property purchase matters alongside the school timetable. Global Investments can help you integrate all of these threads — matching a property in the right area to the right school timeline. Frequently asked questions

Which secondary schools in Cyprus offer IGCSE and A Levels?

The main providers of Cambridge IGCSE and A Level qualifications at secondary level are American Academy Limassol, Foley's School, Heritage Private School (near Limassol), The English School Nicosia, The Grammar School Nicosia, Pascal English Schools and the American Academy Nicosia.

Are secondary schools in Cyprus selective?

The English School Nicosia and The Grammar School Nicosia use entrance examinations. Most other English-medium secondary schools in Cyprus are non-selective but may assess English language ability and academic readiness for placement purposes.

What is the difference between the British and IB pathways at secondary?

The British pathway leads to Cambridge IGCSE at age 15–16 followed by A Levels at 17–18. The IB Diploma (taken at age 16–18) is a broader two-year programme covering six subjects across different disciplines, with additional extended essay, theory of knowledge and CAS components. Both are highly regarded by UK and international universities.

Can my child join a Cyprus secondary school mid-way through a GCSE course?

It is possible but more difficult than joining at the start of a course. A child mid-way through IGCSEs in another country will have a curriculum to reconcile. Speak to schools directly about how they handle mid-course transfers; most experienced schools have done this before.
