IB Schools in Hong Kong: 2025 Results, Options & Admissions Guide

Updated 2026-06-137 min readBy Global Investments Editorial

Hong Kong has established itself as one of the world's leading IB Diploma cities. The results consistently outperform the global average by a wide margin, and several of the city's schools rank among the best IB performers anywhere in the world. For British families who are open to the IB pathway — or specifically want it — Hong Kong offers excellent options.

This guide covers every school offering the IB Diploma in Hong Kong, the 2025 results, what the IB Diploma involves, and how to navigate the IB vs A-Level choice.

Hong Kong IB Results in Context

In 2025, the Hong Kong city average for the IB Diploma was 36.72 points. The global mean was 30.58. That is a gap of more than six points — an extraordinary city-level performance that reflects both the academic selectivity of Hong Kong's international schools and the competitive culture of the student population.

For reference:

  • Global IB mean 2025: 30.58
  • Hong Kong city average 2025: 36.72
  • ESF group average 2025: approximately 36.1
  • Malvern College HK 2025: 39.0
  • GSIS (German Swiss) English stream 2025: 41.0

The IB Diploma is scored out of a maximum of 45 points. A score of 41 places students at the 99th percentile globally.

What the IB Diploma Involves

The IB Diploma Programme (DP) is typically studied at Years 12–13 (ages 16–18). Students study six subjects across different groups — language, social sciences, arts, sciences and mathematics — three at Higher Level and three at Standard Level. Additional requirements include Theory of Knowledge (TOK), an Extended Essay and Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS).

The programme is deliberately broad. Unlike A-Levels, which allow students to narrow to three subjects, IB students maintain a wider range through sixth form. This is an advantage for students who have not decided on a specific university direction, and for US university applications where breadth of curriculum is valued.

The IB PYP (Primary Years Programme) is used by ESF primary schools. There is also an IB MYP (Middle Years Programme) used at Malvern College HK.

Schools Offering the IB Diploma in Hong Kong

GSIS English International Stream — 41.0 Average

The German Swiss International School's English stream is the standout IB school in Hong Kong by results. Located near The Peak on Hong Kong Island, the school offers IGCSE at secondary followed by the IB DP at sixth form.

The 2025 IB average of 41.0 is exceptional by any measure. Students from GSIS are well positioned for Oxbridge, medicine and the most competitive courses at leading UK and US universities.

Fees: Primary HKD 203,700; IB DP years HKD 256,700 (2025-26). No separate mandatory debenture for the English stream (verify directly).

GSIS is selective at secondary and sixth form entry. The IB DP years are particularly competitive. Apply well in advance.

Malvern College Hong Kong — 39.0 Average

Malvern College HK operates at Pak Shek Kok near Tolo Harbour and offers the full IB continuum: PYP in primary, MYP in lower secondary and IB DP in sixth form. Its 2025 IB average of 39.0 places it among the leading IB schools in Hong Kong and reflects a rapidly strengthening academic reputation.

Malvern is a growing school that offers a more complete IB educational journey than schools that only offer DP at sixth form. Its location in Pak Shek Kok is less central than GSIS or the ESF schools, but it is accessible from Sha Tin and surrounding New Territories areas.

ESF Secondary Schools — Group Average 36.1

All five ESF secondary schools — Island School, South Island School, Sha Tin College, West Island School and King George V School — offer the IB Diploma Programme at Years 12–13. The ESF group average in 2025 was approximately 36.1 points, which is at or above the threshold for most Russell Group university offers.

The ESF schools also offer IGCSE/GCSE pathways at Years 10–11, giving students the option to sit IGCSE before progressing to IB DP. However, ESF students do not typically have the option to switch to A-Levels at sixth form within the ESF network.

Fees: HKD 181,100/year (2025-26), rising to HKD 188,300 in 2026-27. Plus NCL at entry.

Discovery College and Renaissance College (ESF All-Through)

Discovery College (Discovery Bay) and Renaissance College (Ma On Shan) offer a more complete IB journey:

  • Discovery College: IB PYP (primary) → IB DP (sixth form). Fees Y12-13: HKD 215,300–225,600/year plus Annual Building Levy.
  • Renaissance College: IB PYP (primary) → IB DP (sixth form). Fees Y12-13: HKD 195,700–203,700/year plus one-off levy.

These are the strongest options for full IB programme continuity within the ESF network.

HKIS — AP with IB Context

Hong Kong International School primarily offers AP (Advanced Placement) courses, which are the American curriculum equivalent rather than IB. HKIS is better suited to families targeting US universities. It does not offer a full IB DP programme and should not be confused with IB schools.

IB Score Requirements for UK Universities

University tier Typical IB offer
Most Russell Group courses 36–38 points
Oxford / Cambridge competitive courses 38–42 points
Medicine / veterinary at top universities 38–40+
Most good UK universities 30–36

A student at GSIS achieving the school average of 41 points is in range for virtually all UK university offers. At ESF's group average of 36.1, a student meets the typical Russell Group threshold.

It is worth noting that IB offers are assessed holistically — the number of points is one element, but subject combination matters too. Higher Level Mathematics, Higher Level Chemistry and similar demanding subjects are specified in offers for science and engineering courses.

IB vs A-Levels in Hong Kong: The Key Considerations

Choose IB if:

  • Your child entered an IB primary (PYP) and has an established IB learning context
  • Your child may apply to US universities as well as UK ones — IB is optimal for both markets simultaneously
  • You want curriculum breadth at sixth form rather than three narrow A-Level subjects
  • You want access to GSIS's exceptional IB results
  • Your child's ESF primary school naturally feeds into an ESF secondary with IB DP

Choose A-Levels if:

  • Your child has completed GCSE/IGCSE in the UK and a curriculum switch would be disruptive
  • You are planning a return to the UK before sixth form is complete
  • You want the most familiar UCAS A-Level experience
  • You specifically want Kellett's UK independent school environment

Both pathways are fully recognised by UK universities. Neither is inherently superior for UK university entry. The decision is more about fit, continuity and family circumstances.

New IB Capacity Opening in 2026

Nord Anglia International School HK Sixth Form Centre (Hung Hom, August 2026) will become the first school in Hong Kong to offer both A-Levels and IB DP in the same sixth form. This is a significant structural addition — it allows families to defer the IB vs A-Level decision to Year 12.

NLCS Hong Kong (North London Collegiate School) is targeting a 2026 opening. NLCS's UK parent school was ranked first in the UK in 2025 IB results with a 36.5 average, and will bring another high-performing IB option to the city.
