IB Schools in Berlin: A 2026 Guide to the International Baccalaureate

The International Baccalaureate is the backbone of international education in Berlin. Whether a family arrives from London, Dubai, Singapore or New York, they will almost certainly find that the IB Diploma — and, at younger ages, the IB Primary Years Programme and Middle Years Programme — is the qualification their child's new school follows. Understanding which Berlin schools offer the IB, what fees to expect and how the Diploma is viewed by universities worldwide is central to any Berlin school search.

Why the IB Dominates in Berlin

Berlin lacks a large network of single-nation curriculum schools such as those found in major expat hubs like Dubai or Singapore. Instead, its international sector settled on the IB as the common language of internationally portable education. This has practical advantages: an IB-educated child moving between Berlin, London, Hong Kong and back faces fewer curriculum disruptions than a child on a narrower national programme. For globally mobile families, that coherence is valuable.

The other consequence is that A-Levels are rare in Berlin. Most British-curriculum schools in the city — including Berlin British School — move pupils from IGCSE through to the IB Diploma rather than A-Levels. Families specifically committed to A-Level provision should verify availability carefully. For the full picture, see our IGCSE and A-Levels in Berlin guide.

The IB Framework

The IB offers four programmes covering ages three to nineteen:

  • IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) — ages 3–12, inquiry-based, transdisciplinary
  • IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) — ages 11–16, conceptual approach, builds on PYP
  • IB Diploma Programme (DP) — ages 16–19, two-year final qualification
  • IB Career-related Programme (CP) — available at a small number of schools, combines the DP with vocational study

Not all IB World Schools offer all four programmes. Some run PYP-to-MYP only, handing pupils to a different school for the Diploma. Others offer the full continuum.

All figures are indicative ranges as of 2026 and exclude registration fees, deposits, examination entry fees and transport. Confirm current fees directly with each school. For a comprehensive fee comparison, see our international school fees Berlin guide.

Berlin Brandenburg International School (BBIS)

BBIS in Kleinmachnow — about 17 kilometres south-west of central Berlin, between the city and Potsdam — is one of the area's largest and oldest IB schools. It offers the full IB continuum from early years through to the Diploma and has a student body drawn from over 75 nationalities. The out-of-city location is a trade-off: the campus is spacious and has boarding provision, but families need to factor in the commute or consider living in Kleinmachnow or nearby Zehlendorf. Fees sit at the higher end of the Berlin range.

Berlin International School (BIS)

BIS in Dahlem is an IB World School accredited by the Council of International Schools (CIS). It runs from primary (Grade 1) to Grade 12 and follows the IB throughout. The Dahlem location puts it in the heart of south-west Berlin's school corridor, within commuting distance of Zehlendorf, Steglitz, Charlottenburg and Wilmersdorf. Admission involves placement assessments from Grade 6 upwards and trial days for younger pupils. Waiting lists operate at popular entry points. For more on the admissions process, see our applying to Berlin international schools guide.

Berlin Metropolitan School (BMS)

BMS at Linienstraße 122 in Mitte is the largest and oldest international school in the former East Berlin. Founded in 2004, it uses the IB PYP in the primary years, Cambridge IGCSE in Grades 9–10 and the IB Diploma in Grades 11–12. The Mitte location is central and accessible from across the city, making it popular with families in Prenzlauer Berg, Mitte itself and east Berlin generally. BMS operates an income-related fee model with sibling discounts, making it one of the more flexible schools in the city on fees.

Berlin British School (BBS)

BBS in Charlottenburg follows the English National Curriculum through IGCSE and then moves to the IB Diploma rather than A-Levels. For British families this is the most culturally familiar environment, and BBS has strong UK university placement statistics. The absence of A-Levels is not a gap — the IB is an accepted route into UK universities — but families should understand the transition before enrolling. See our British schools in Berlin guide for more detail.

Nelson Mandela School

The Nelson Mandela School is publicly funded and charges no tuition. Students can complete the bilingual German-English Abitur or the IB Diploma. Families do pay IB examination fees in the Diploma years, but otherwise the cost to parents is minimal. Admission is competitive and typically favours pupils who have followed the school's bilingual programme from an earlier stage. It is not realistically accessible to a family arriving mid-secondary without prior German-English bilingual education.

The Staatliche Europa-Schule (SESB): The Low-Cost Alternative

For families arriving early enough to plan properly, Berlin's state-run Staatliche Europa-Schule Berlin (SESB) programme is worth understanding. The SESB operates across a number of ordinary state schools and delivers bilingual instruction from Grade 1, with roughly half the curriculum in German and half in a partner language — one of nine options, including English. Tuition is free, and the programme leads to the bilingual Abitur rather than the IB. It is an excellent option for families settling long-term who want a genuine bilingual education at no cost, but it is not suited to short postings or to children arriving at secondary age without an existing German-English bilingual foundation.

IB Diploma: What Universities See

The IB Diploma is scored out of 45 points (maximum 42 from six subjects plus up to 3 from the core Theory of Knowledge, Extended Essay and CAS components). UK universities make IB offers expressed as a points total; common offers for competitive courses range from 32 to 38 points, with highly selective medical and law programmes typically at the higher end. US colleges assess the IB alongside other evidence of academic achievement. German universities accept the Diploma as a university entrance qualification (Hochschulzugangsberechtigung), though specific recognition terms vary by federal state. For a deeper look, see our Berlin university admissions guide.

Choosing Between IB Schools

There is no single "best" IB school in Berlin. Families should weigh:

  • Location and commute — BBIS requires a longer journey from central Berlin; BIS suits the south-west; BMS suits the north-east and east
  • Full continuum vs. curriculum switch — switching from a PYP school to a separate IB Diploma school at 16 creates a transition risk; full-continuum schools reduce this
  • Fee level and flexibility — BMS's income-related model and the free SESB/Nelson Mandela route sit at opposite ends of the cost spectrum
  • Community and culture — school culture matters as much as curriculum; visit before applying
