Best British Curriculum Schools in Bangkok: 2026 Guide for Expat Families

British Curriculum in Bangkok: A Market Overview

Of Bangkok's 103 or more international schools, 57 follow the British curriculum — the largest single curriculum group in the city. For British families relocating to Thailand, maintaining continuity with the English school system is usually the primary consideration, and Bangkok offers a genuine range of options across the quality spectrum.

The British curriculum pathway in Bangkok follows the same framework as in the UK: Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), Key Stage 1 and 2 through primary, Key Stage 3 through Year 9, and IGCSE at Years 10 and 11. At sixth form, Bangkok diverges from what most British families expect in one key respect: Bangkok Patana, one of the city's most respected British curriculum schools, transitions students to the IB Diploma Programme rather than A-Levels. Harrow International School, Brighton College, Shrewsbury International School, and the incoming Wycombe Abbey all offer A-Levels — making Bangkok actually well-served by A-Level providers.

Understanding this fork is critical when choosing a school. A family intending to apply to UK universities via UCAS using A-Level predicted grades will need to choose either Harrow or Brighton College. Families comfortable with the IB DP — which UK universities accept and which in some respects broadens a student's curriculum — have more options.

The Sixth-Form Fork: A-Levels or IB Diploma?

A-Levels

A-Levels remain the most direct route to UCAS applications. Students take three or four subjects in depth, and predicted grades map cleanly onto UCAS tariff points. UK university admissions tutors are fully conversant with A-Levels and the system is well-established.

In Bangkok, Harrow International School is the primary A-Level provider. Its 2024 results were strong: 51% of grades were A* or A, against a UK national average of approximately 27.6%. Brighton College Bangkok (Vibhavadi campus, open from August 2025) also offers A-Levels. The incoming Wycombe Abbey International School Bangkok (opening August 2026) will add a third significant A-Level provider.

IB Diploma Programme

The IB DP is a two-year pre-university qualification taken at ages 16–18, consisting of six subjects across defined groups plus Theory of Knowledge, an Extended Essay, and CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service). The maximum score is 45 points. UK universities, including Oxford, Cambridge, and all Russell Group institutions, set standard IB DP offers. Russell Group offers typically require 36–38 points for competitive courses.

The IB DP is considered rigorous and broad. Students cannot simply drop challenging subjects, which some find constraining but which also prevents the strategic narrowing that sometimes occurs at A-Level. UK university admissions tutors regard strong IB DP results very favourably.

Bangkok Patana School follows British National Curriculum through IGCSE and then transitions to IB DP at sixth form. Shrewsbury International School also follows British National Curriculum through IGCSE, but offers A-Levels at sixth form — making it more similar to Harrow and Brighton College in terms of qualification pathway.

Bangkok Patana School

Bangkok Patana is the oldest and most established British international school in Thailand. Founded in 1957, it sits in Bang Na on Sukhumvit 105 — a location that has gradually built its own dense expat community around the school. Many Patana families essentially choose Bang Na as their neighbourhood because of the school.

Curriculum and Results

The school follows the British National Curriculum through primary and IGCSE, then transitions to the IB Diploma at sixth form. It is notably non-selective — children are admitted by availability and English proficiency rather than academic test performance — which makes its IB outcomes particularly creditable.

In 2025, the average IB DP score was approximately 35 points (global average: 30.58). The 128-strong cohort received 441 university offers from 172 universities across 16 countries, including 239 from world top-100 institutions.

Accreditation

Bangkok Patana holds CIS (Council of International Schools) accreditation, re-accredited in May 2022, and WASC accreditation. It is a non-profit institution.

Fees (2025-26 Academic Year)

  • Primary: approximately THB 450,000–620,000 per year
  • Secondary (IGCSE): approximately THB 620,000–780,000 per year
  • IB DP: approximately THB 750,000–800,000 per year
  • One-time fees: Application THB 4,000; Entrance Fee THB 250,000 (first child), THB 200,000 (subsequent children); Refundable Deposit THB 50,000

Harrow International School Bangkok

Harrow Bangkok is the only school in Thailand that carries an Outstanding BSO (British Schools Overseas) inspection rating across all categories — awarded in 2023. It is associated with Harrow School in the UK and is the city's leading provider of A-Levels for British expat families.

Curriculum and Results

The school follows the British National Curriculum from Nursery through IGCSE (Years 10–11) and then offers A-Levels at sixth form (Years 12–13). This is a deliberate and distinguishing feature — families choosing Harrow do so in part specifically because of A-Levels rather than the IB.

A-Level results 2024: 51% A/A* (UK national average approximately 27.6%). University destinations for the Class of 2024: 51% UK (Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial, LSE, UCL, wide Russell Group spread), 12% USA, 21% Thailand.

Boarding is available from Year 6, making Harrow the only boarding school option in Bangkok. This is particularly relevant for families with parents who travel frequently.

Accreditation

BSO Outstanding (all categories, 2023); CIS; NEASC.

Fees (2026-27 Academic Year)

  • Nursery: THB 737,600
  • Reception: THB 757,600
  • Years 1–5: THB 880,300
  • Years 6–8: THB 961,900
  • Years 9–11: THB 1,040,000
  • Years 12–13 (A-Levels): THB 1,063,000
  • Boarding (add-on): Weekly THB 456,700; Full THB 571,100
  • One-time fees: Application THB 5,000; Admission Fee THB 225,000 (non-refundable); Day student deposit THB 200,000

Location

Harrow is located near Don Mueang Airport in northern Bangkok — outside the central Sukhumvit expat corridor. The location is less convenient for families living in central or southern Bangkok, but the school operates a comprehensive bus network covering the wider city. Housing near Don Mueang is typically more affordable than Sukhumvit.

Shrewsbury International School

Shrewsbury International School operates two Bangkok campuses:

Riverside Campus: Located on the Chao Phraya river. CIS re-accredited April 2025. The school follows British National Curriculum through IGCSE, then offers A-Levels at sixth form. Secondary fees range from approximately THB 700,000–1,210,000 per year, placing it at the high end of the premium tier.

City Campus: Located in the Bang Na area. CIS accredited January 2024. Similar academic pathway.

Shrewsbury has a strong reputation in Bangkok's British curriculum community. It is a strong alternative to Bangkok Patana for families wanting British curriculum through IGCSE, but families who prefer A-Levels at sixth form will find Shrewsbury better suited than Patana — Shrewsbury offers A-Levels, not IB DP.

Brighton College Bangkok

Brighton College Bangkok opened its first Bangkok campus on Sukhumvit, and a second Vibhavadi campus opened in August 2025. Both campuses offer:

  • British National Curriculum
  • IGCSE
  • A-Levels at sixth form

Secondary fees at the Vibhavadi campus are approximately THB 766,500 per year. For families who want British curriculum through A-Levels but are deterred by Harrow's location in northern Bangkok, Brighton College's Sukhumvit-accessible campuses offer an alternative.

New British Schools Opening August 2026

Dulwich College Bangkok (Bang Na)

Dulwich College is a prestigious UK independent school brand entering Bangkok directly in the neighbourhood most associated with Bangkok Patana. Phase 1 (August 2026) covers Nursery to Year 6, with plans to expand to secondary and sixth form by 2029 and eventual capacity of up to 1,800 students. The full curriculum pathway — whether IB Diploma or A-Levels at sixth form — will be confirmed as the school expands. For Bang Na families currently on Bangkok Patana waiting lists, Dulwich may provide a high-quality primary alternative from day one.

Wycombe Abbey International School Bangkok

Wycombe Abbey is a heritage girls' school in the UK, and the Bangkok international school will serve Early Years to Sixth Form, offering British curriculum, IGCSE, and A-Levels. It is a significant addition to the city's A-Level capacity and will appeal to families seeking a girls-school option with a strong UK academic heritage.

Choosing Between A-Levels and IB Diploma: A Practical Framework

Factor Consider A-Levels (Harrow, Brighton, Shrewsbury, Wycombe Abbey) Consider IB DP (Patana, NIST)
University target UK-focused, UCAS familiar with A-Levels UK, US, or global — IB widely accepted
Subjects Deep specialism in 3–4 subjects Broad six-subject programme mandatory
Child's profile Strong in specific disciplines Strong across multiple areas
Flexibility Easier to drop weaker subjects Broader but less flexible
Location Comfortable near Don Mueang (Harrow) or Sukhumvit/Vibhavadi (Brighton) More options across Bangkok
School ethos UK-branded school with strong alumni Internationally oriented schools

Neither pathway is objectively superior. The IB DP is increasingly accepted as equivalent to A-Levels by UK admissions tutors, and NIST and Bangkok Patana have consistent track records of placing students at top UK universities. The choice should reflect the child's learning style, the family's likely university target market, and the practical question of where in Bangkok you plan to live.

Accreditation Summary

School BSO CIS WASC
Harrow Bangkok Outstanding (2023) Yes No
Bangkok Patana Yes (2022) Yes
Shrewsbury Riverside Yes (2025) No

Frequently asked questions

Which Bangkok schools offer A-Levels rather than IB at sixth form?

Harrow International School Bangkok and Brighton College Bangkok (both campuses) offer A-Levels. Bangkok Patana School and Shrewsbury International School follow British curriculum through IGCSE but switch to the IB Diploma Programme at sixth form, not A-Levels.

What is BSO Outstanding accreditation?

BSO (British Schools Overseas) is the UK Department for Education's inspection scheme for overseas British schools, conducted by Ofsted-approved inspectors. An Outstanding rating across all categories — as Harrow Bangkok received in 2023 — is the highest possible grade and is a strong quality indicator for British families.

How do Bangkok Patana School fees compare to Harrow Bangkok?

Bangkok Patana is in the premium tier, with tuition of approximately THB 450,000–800,000 per year depending on year group. Harrow sits in the ultra-premium tier, running THB 737,600–1,063,000 per year. Both schools charge substantial one-time entrance fees in addition to tuition.

Is there a new British curriculum school opening in Bangkok in 2026?

Yes. Dulwich College Bangkok (Bang Na) is due to open in August 2026, initially offering British curriculum from Nursery to Year 6 (Phase 1), with plans to expand to secondary and sixth form by 2029. Wycombe Abbey International School Bangkok also opens in August 2026, offering the full British curriculum through A-Levels from Early Years to Sixth Form. Both will compete in the premium segment.
